Kids' Climate Change Challenge

The Kids' Climate Change Challenge is a lively, interactive presentation designed to

  1. get kids and their families to think about climate change and its causes,

  2. do things on the spot that reinforce positive and effective pro-planet ideas, and

  3. imagine and commit to future actions designed to combat climate change.

Kids and their families play a game together on teams to advance around a climate change spiral. To advance, moving from the red zone toward green, the teams must select a card from the draw pile and follow its instructions.

  • Think cards ask questions about climate change that participants must try to answer.

  • Do cards require teams to do something on the spot such as create a jingle, make a poster, or put on a short skit.

  • Change cards require teams to imagine concrete changes they can make in their lives and commit to those changes.

At the end of the game, teams are asked to reflect briefly on the experience, sharing their favorite moment and sharing one idea they think the other teams should take with them. Participants who sign the Change for Climate Change Pledge receive a Cool Kid button.

The presentation includes brief introductory remarks from Julie Hall, author of A Hot Planet Needs Cool Kids, and Sarah Lane, Editor in Chief of Green Goat Books.
